Modern Archives

Roadmap

How Modern Archives is growing from a publishing foundation into a connected reading, discovery, and research experience.

Roadmap

Modern Archives began as a way to produce high-quality digital editions of enduring public-domain works. The direction from here is to turn a collection of well-made books into a connected place to read, discover, and study them. The stages below describe that path: the earlier ones are largely in place, and the later ones describe where the archive is headed.

Phase 1: Publishing Foundation (Established)

  • A reliable editorial workflow with standardized formatting
  • Consistent web and EPUB editions
  • Clear, consistent metadata across the collection

Phase 2: Reading Experience (Current)

  • Clearer navigation and typography
  • Easier collection browsing and book organization
  • A comfortable reading experience that keeps the text first

Phase 3: Intellectual Discovery

  • Connections between related works, authors, and historical periods
  • Historical context grounded in the sources themselves
  • Ways to explore a topic across several books rather than one at a time

Phase 4: Research Platform

  • Search and exploration across the whole collection, not just within a book
  • Study and research tools built on the source material

Phase 5: Learning Ecosystem

  • Reading paths and study aids for sustained learning
  • Primary-source collections and historical context for deeper study

The goal is not the largest collection of books, but the highest-quality experience for discovering, understanding, and connecting enduring ideas.
